Video game adaptations have become much more frequent in Hollywood nowadays, so much so that it feels like we are in the early 2000s again, only that the adaptations do not suck as much as back then (but are also not as memorable).
But according to The Batman 2 writer, Hollywood is becoming obsessed with video games as it lives out the last days of its comic book phase.
As first spotted by Insider Gaming, one of the co-writers of The Batman 2, Mattson Tomlin, commented on the fabled Mega Man adaptation, which is apparently still in the works though he is no longer a part of it.
Tomlin said he had no new information to share about it, but that Hollywood’s newfound obsession with video games will likely lead to its being made at some point.
“Hollywood is sort of making a shift from being comic book obsessed to video game obsessed so I wouldn’t be surprised if it sees the light of day in some form, but after so much time gone by, it’s unlikely I’ll have anything to do with it,” he wrote on X.
Comic book movies, like the recent Supergirl flick, remain an active part of Hollywood’s casual repertoire, but video games are slowly making their way into the mainstream. We recently got TV shows that were particularly praised, i.e., Fallout and The Last of Us, and now expect God of War and even Tetris to get their own films.
It is going to take a while to shake off the comics, though, with Marvel bent on making even more of its MCU titles, but then again it all depends on one thing: money, and that, my friends, is slowly moving away from there.
