Being a Hollow Knight fan has its ups and downs regarding Silksong. The game initially launched in 2017, and in February 2019, Team Cherry revealed a teaser trailer for the sequel. Aside from occasional hints at its potential release date, not much more is known about this title.
Until now, that is. Silksong’s wishlist count grows every time an industry event rolls around. And every time, fans of the original wind up feeling disappointed. However, as of the April 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, that has all changed.
So, let’s discuss what we know about Hollow Knight: Silksong, including its release window and platforms.
Is there a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong?
Hollow Knight: Silksong has a confirmed release window of sometime in 2025. During the April Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, a brief three-second clip showed 2025 as its expected launch year. Although this didn’t include any extensive gameplay showcases, this short video is all the information we need to confirm that the odds of it coming out this year are high.
Although this release year dropped during the direct, that doesn’t mean it’s immune to delays. Back in May of 2023, developer Team Cherry’s PR and marketing representative Matthew Griffin wrote in a Twitter (X) post that they initially planned to release Silksong in the first half of 2023. However, Hollow Knight’s sequel was subsequently delayed due to its increasingly large scope.
“We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can,” said Griffin.
That said, we know that when Silksong comes out, Game Pass subscribers will have access to it on Day 1. Its appearance in the Switch 2 Direct also suggests it’ll be available on Nintendo’s upcoming console, which launches on June 5. Since then, Silksong has appeared on Nintendo’s eShop with “TBD” as its release date, but this is expected to change as we get closer to its launch.
At the time of writing, there’s no confirmed release day or month for Hollow Knight: Silksong. With its appearance in the Switch Direct in mind, it may not be out until after June, so it can launch on multiple platforms. Alternatively, it may come out on platforms like PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X/S before coming to others later.
What else do we know about Hollow Knight: Silksong?
There’s a surprising amount of information available about the game outside of its exact release date. For example, we know it’ll be available on the following platforms:
- PC
- PS4 and PS5
- Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S
- Nintendo Switch and 2
- Mac
- Linux
We also know the protagonist won’t be The Knight, as in the original game. Rather, players will control Hornet, the deuteragonist of Hollow Knight.
According to an info sheet by Team Cherry, the game begins with Hornet being “captured and brought to this unfamiliar land.” Players will “battle foes and solve mysteries as [Hornet] ascends on a deadly pilgrimage to the kingdom’s peak.” In Silksong, there will be more than 150 new enemies to take down as you make your way to the top of the world. Thankfully, you’ll have access to “a whole new suite of nimble moves” to make quick work of them.
Once you complete the game, you can take advantage of Silk Soul mode. This is an “all-new mode that spins the game into a unique, challenging experience.”
