Here’s what Rocket League used to look like

Rocket League‘s celebrating its third birthday by throwing things back to the origins of the game. Rocket League was originally called Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars and it was played on a slightly different field. There was room to maneuver behind the goals (similar to a hockey rink), and the pitch was significantly bigger.

Starting today, Rocket League has that original field available to play in a special anniversary playlist. I hopped into it first thing this morning and tried undoing 1,000 hours of muscle memory. This video is the result of that effort.

The most immediate takeaway is that no one really knows how to score. The usual means of centering the ball (playing it along the side and then back wall) won’t work here because it’ll fall harmlessly behind the net. This arena favors cheeky in-field passing but good luck getting that sort of unspoken chemistry with three players who are all solo queuing. It’s kind of a shitshow.

The anniversary arena isn’t here to stay forever and ever. The event runs today through July 23.
