Twenty years ago today, Resident Evil opened its mansion doors to a whole new genre of video games.

It on was March 22, 1996, that we first met Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton’s beard and Albert Wesker’s hair.

Capcom plans to spend the rest of the year celebrating, and will release a series of interviews and commentaries from original team members who had “a vital role” in developing the game, the genre, and the multi-million dollar brand. The first features an interview with producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

Since the birth of the series on March 22, 1996, Resident Evil has gone on to become one of the most iconic and successful gaming franchises of all time,” says Capcom’s press statement. “With game sales topping 66 million copies worldwide and its expansion into successful Hollywood feature films, merchandise, attractions and events across the globe, the series continues to infect the hearts of survival horror fans everywhere.”

I fell in love with Resident Evil the moment that first zombie lifted his head from his lunch to stare at me, and I’ve been in love ever since. Tell me – what’s your favourite Resident Evil moment?

Talking of Resident Evil… did you catch the news it’s going to become a musical in Japan? Yes, really.
