H.A.W.X. gets real: new vid reveals utilization of satellite imagery

The one thing I’ve always loved about Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy games  — excluding Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and that Lone Wolf abomination — is the realism. When bullet meets flesh, the bullet always wins. In the case of H.A.W.X., Ubisoft’s upcoming jet fighting game, realism is displayed through physics and environments.

Ubisoft’s authenticity coordinator, Travis Getz, opens the above video by explaining the realistic ace up Ubi’s sleeve — a company named GeoEye.

GeoEye archives and retrieves high fidelity satellite imagery of Earth. The environments in H.A.W.X. are built off that data, making all the landscapes in the game insanely authentic. You may not be able to see your house, but you can find a ballpark in its appropriate position.

Speaking of real, check out GeoEye’s communications and marketing dude, Mike Brender. That guy is really happy to talk on camera.
