Complete Guts & Blackpowder Class Tier List

Just keep the Musicians away from the frontline, pls.

One of the things I love about this game the most is the fact that there so many combinations and setups you can come up with. This is in large part due to the MMO nature of the game, but I’d still say it’s because the classes are so brilliantly designed. Still, some are better than others, while even the worst ones have their purpose. To untangle this web, I prepped a Guts and Blackpowder classes and weapons tier list. Let’s take a look at how to start your Napoleonic zombie-slaying journey.

Another neat thing is that weapons are inherently tied to your class, so you can take out two birds with one stone when selecting the class. Obviously, the list above is subjective, but you can’t deny that regular Infantry is by far the most reliable and consistent class. I wouldn’t judge you for picking the Surgeon and Cleric, but things get a bit iffy if you want to main the Musician class. Regardless, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of this Guts and Blackpowder classes and weapons tier list, as there’s quite a bit to cover.

You know the drill—if these two aren’t manning the frontlines, what are you even doing? Their impact goes far beyond mere damage, given the fact they both have no significant downsides. Of course, you’ll still need a Sapper or Surgeon around, but in a vacuum, there’s just no beating this duo.

NameInfo
Infantry The Infantry class is your all-around go-to, solid in both close combat and shooting down zombies from a distance. You start off with a standard Musket and Sabre, but once you hit the Shop, your options really open up. You’ll be able to swap out your primary for weapons like the Carbine, Rifle, Horse Artillery Pistol, Lance, or even the Air Rifle. For melee, you can pick up the Hand Axe or go heavier with the Heavy Sabre. Infantry also gets access to pretty much all the utilities the other Infantry classes use—though there’s still some debate over whether the Siege Engineer Armor counts as a utility or not.
SeamanThe Seaman is built for chaos—perfect for clearing out swarms of zombies where other classes might get overwhelmed. They’re aggressive, loud, and specialize in turning clustered threats into scattered limbs. Out of the gate, they’re packing a Blunderbuss and Sabre, making them a nightmare up close. Once you’ve hit the Shop, you can switch things up with heavy hitters like the Nock Gun or go for the quicker Navy Pistol. For melee, you can swap in a Hand Axe or the brutal Boarding Axe, depending on how messy you want things to get.

I know the Sapper inclusion might be a bit controversial, but the sheer utility the class provides. The same goes for Surgeon, as without these two classes, you’re in for a bad time when you’re facing off against those nasty zombies.

NameInfo
SapperSappers don’t play for glory—they play for control. While others rush in swinging, Sappers shape the battlefield itself. Walls, traps, barriers—if zombies are slowing down or breaking apart, chances are a Sapper made it happen. They carry a Hammer and Axe by default, but that’s just the beginning. Depending on how you want to build out your kit, you can swap in a Pickaxe or Spade for a more direct melee approach. And if you’re looking to soak up some damage while holding the front, Siege Engineer Armor’s an option—assuming you’ve earned it. It’s not the flashiest class, but when everything’s collapsing and your team’s still standing, you’ll know why you picked it.
Surgeon Surgeons aren’t here to rack up kills—they’re the reason your team survives long enough to get any. While everyone else is swinging blades or firing off rounds, the Surgeon’s in the thick of it, keeping people on their feet with bandages, grit, and sheer stubbornness. Armed with a Sabre, Medical Supplies, and a Box of Bandages, they’re always ready to patch someone up mid-chaos. They start with a full stock of Supplies, but they won’t stay topped off forever. To keep healing, you’ll need to scavenge—every zombie you put down has a chance to drop a grey pile of Supplies, each one refilling a chunk of your gauge. No flashy weapons, no game-breaking utilities—just one upgrade in the Shop: the Extended Surgeon Kit.

This is where it gets interesting. I know some of y’all will definitely put Officer in A or even S tier, but I still think he has a long way to go. And don’t get me wrong—the Chaplain is an important support class, but compared to Infantry or Surgeon, it falls short.

NameInfo
OfficerBuilt for speed and momentum, Officers are the fastest class in the game and bring a damage boost that turns any squad into a wrecking crew. With a custom Sabre and trusty Pistol, they’re designed to stay mobile and keep pressure high. You can swap the default firearm for a Double Barrel or Brass Pistol if you’ve unlocked them in the Shop. Just don’t expect sniper-level accuracy—these guns shine up close. Fire off a shot, then dive in with the Sabre to finish the job. An Officer that keeps moving is nearly untouchable.
ChaplainThe Chaplain is a walking miracle—part healer, part crowd control, and fully immune to infection. While other classes risk turning, the Chaplain never will. Armed with the Crucifix, a wooden Stake, Blessing, and Mercy, they specialize in reducing infection effects and keeping the team in fighting shape. They’re not built for heavy combat—the Stake hits light—but the Crucifix (and later, the Exorcism Crucifix and Divinity from the Shop) can disrupt undead and cleanse teammates when things get grim. Think of the Chaplain as your spiritual shield—best kept just behind the front lines, ready to step in when all hope starts to crack.

Although this is the lowest-ranked class in this entire Guts and Blackpowder classes tier list, you’ll still notice that it’s in a decent tier. Truth be told, there are no horrendously bad classes (oi

NameInfo
Musician The Musician is less about killing zombies and more about boosting morale—assuming they’re not off-key. Armed with a Sabre and whatever instrument they didn’t lose in a tavern brawl, they dish out passive buffs by playing tunes mid-battle. Useful? Sometimes. Loud? Always. With Drums or a Bugle, they’re better off near the front, riding the coattails of real fighters. If they’ve got the Fife or Bagpipes, it’s probably safer (and saner) to keep them in the back where they won’t catch a stray bite—or annoy half the team
