GP editorial: ‘Jack Thompson a curious choice for freedom award’

Just in case you missed all the fun, GamePolitics (a site run by perhaps the only guy who could ever claim to be a “games journalist” seriously) recently ran an editorial questioning the state of Utah’s funny decision to name Jack Thompson a hero at its Freedom Festival awards. Jack was honored for personifying American values of family, freedom, God and country. Most of us honor him for being “a bit of a tit.”

Regardless, GP’s Dennis McCauley pointed out that the so-called American hero has recently unlocked the following achievements:

  • has been recommended for a 10-year disbarment by the Florida Bar
  • has been judged guilty of 27 ethical offenses by a Florida judge, who is sending her recommendation to the Florida Supreme Court
  • the 27 offenses include things like: “Knowingly making a false statement”, “Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation” and ” Engaging in conduct in connection with the practice of law that is prejudicial to the administration of justice”
  • may no longer submit filings to the Florida Supreme Court, in part because he included porn pictures in a motion (and NOT in a pornography case)
  • included gay porn pictures in a federal court filing (also not a pornography case)
  • received a cautionary visit from the U.S. Marshals following a federal court filing in which he wrote “…enemy combatants at Guantanamo are to get more due process from federal judges than what I am to have. I guess my “mistake” was not killing 3000 people to make my point…”
  • called for the impeachment of Utah’s Republican Attorney General when the AG suggested that a video game bill written by Thompson would be unconstitutional

Heroic? GP thinks not, but Jack Thompson would argue otherwise. In fact, the silver-haired Lothario actually responded to GP’s editorial, despite one’s first thought that an American hero would have better things to do. Jack had this to say:

Dennis, you have posting up here calling me a douchebag and the like.  Nice that you enforce your posting policies–not–when it comes to me.

Further, you have up at this site the assertion that I lobbied to get myself nominated for this award.  I didn’t know anything about it until these folks called.  You were told that.  The Foundation told you that, and yet this site is nothing more than an opinion toilet where gamers who have absolutely nothing better to do make up “facts” as if this were some kind of Sims game.

The Foundation knew ALL about my problems with the Bar.  I told them.  The fact is this:  Dennis McCauley and his little lemmings here were so cruel and so bigoted and such liars that what went on here confirmed their choice and made the award all that sweeter.

I sat on the back of a convertible today at the parade, riding by 200,000 or more people, with mothers of kids on their laps waving and saying “Thank you for trying to protect our kids.”

You fascist immoral jerks can have your games.  I have the heart of America.  And you, Dennis, are a liar.

Jack Thompson

Personally, we here at Destructoid extend our congratulations to Jack Thompson. We’re thrilled that our old friend got to watch thousands of children from the back of a car, something that I’m sure he’s always wanted to do.

GamePolitics might question Utah’s decision to name Jack Thompson an American hero, but we understand fully. With America gripped by fear and confusion and finding itself run by those with a lack of understanding and tolerance, one can see why Thompson is seen to reflect everything that the country stands for.
