Gearbox Software isn’t messing around with names. The studio responsible for the PC port of Halo: Combat Evolved and the Brothers in Arms franchise filed four brilliant trademark registrations: World War II Hero, War Hero, Brothers in Arms War Hero, and Modern War Hero.
We can’t quit thinking that at least one of these potential titles will require or at least make us of a plastic guitar. Imagine this: you’re in the trenches, pummeling Nazi baddies in World War II Hero. Suddenly, the clouds part and Hitler and his pet anaconda descend slowly from the sky. In order to stop him (he adds plus five morale to all Nazi soldiers and snakes on the battlefield), you’ll need to pick up the Guitar and get at least a 90 percent on Bon Jovi’s “Dead or Alive.”
Oh, and while you’re shredding, the war just … stops. Music is a weapon like that.
As with anything trademark, don’t take these names to the bank: there’s a good chance we won’t be playing War Hero or Modern War Hero in the future. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford just called out Bungie and Infinity Ward for not doing original things. There’s no way the Gearbox brass thinks Modern War Hero is awesome and original, right?
“I keep waiting to hear what Bungie is going to do that’s not Halo,” Pitchford said. “Those guys are amazing, right? They walk on water! And the same with Infinity Ward. It’s like, dude I’m totally psyched to get my Call of Duty fix every year, but you guys are amazing! What else have you got? Can you give me something I haven’t seen before?”
Point taken, sir. Let’s see what else you have, Gearbox. These registrations just aren’t doing it for us.
