GDC 11: The Dillinger Escape Plan rocks Homefront ‘rally’

THQ held a public event during GDC this today, a promotional “rally” to promote its upcoming first-person shooter, Homefront. Oh, and it invited the indomitable wall of sound that is The Dillinger Escape Plan to play. Because why not?

The event kicked off at noon, with the publisher first inviting foreign relations expert Tae Kim to speak on Homefront‘s fictional future timeline, which finds the Greater Korean Republic occupying the United States in the year 2027. As the clean cut Kim spoke from behind a podium, a restless crowd shouted “Dillinger!” in his face as he did his best to keep calm.

Kim was followed by Electromagnetic Pulse blast expert and published author, Dr. William Forstchen. As Forstchen tried to explain the real (and quite terrifying) dangers of an EMP attack on the United States, the crowd continued to get rowdy, and shouted “Dillinger!” in his general direction. (One person even noted that he had an “awesome comb over.”)

Next up with Vice President of Core Games Danny Bilson, who patiently took the stage smiling at the crowd as he tried to speak about Homefront. Right on cue, the shouts of “Dillinger!” rose from the crowd as Bilson laughed at what may be the most absurd event GDC has ever seen.

The Dillinger Escape Plan took the stage around 12:30, tearing through about an hour’s worth of music (including a cover of Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power”) before being forced to shut down. Highlights include the shocked faces of those passing by as the band wrecked the stage, and the total meltdown THQ public relations had as singer Greg Puciato climbed on top of a nearby public carousel.

Homefront is out March 15, and I still have no idea what The Dillinger Escape Plan has to do with the game.
