GDC 08: APB makes a big splash, gamers gawk in amazement

Crackdown still comes to mind as the game that nearly overshadowed the title it included as a demo, but as the following videos shared with us by GameVideos shows, Realtime Worlds isn’t looking to be a one-trick pony. As you can see, this action-based MMO powered by the Unreal Engine3  is looking gorgeous, indeed.

As the official site shows, APB is ripe for us to live the tale of two rival factions (Enforcements and Criminals), who vie for power on the streets of a fictional modern day metropolis. However, in lieu of the traditional method of endless level grinding, players will progress in the game based on player skill.

More on this, as well as some more videos for you to consume, after the jump:

One of the many features about the game is the ambitious character creating tools it gives you to play with. See any familiar faces that could be considered noteworthy here? Miyamoto gets all the love these days. Now how about some pants?

However, we all know it takes more than this to culminate in a great game. That may be true, but you can’t rule out some interesting possibilities as a result of it. Look out below, and marvel as some guy reminiscent of the 70’s icon Shaft drops the hurt on some would-be crooks.

Still not sold on this sold on this MMO idea yet? APB has one last video, which has affectionately been titled “Drive-by,” and for good reason. Seems as if somebody forgot to tell that guy with the TV set that it’s not an ideal time for a criminal to cross the street. Regardless, it gives us a glimpse of the “on the fly” matchmaking scenarios of the game.

While your busy picking your jaw up off the floor, I’ll conclude this with news that APB is obviously in development for the PC and “next-gen” consoles — and I can’t wait! Never thought I’d see the day when a massively multiplayer online game would get me this excited. Then again, Crackdown caught us all by surprise as well. Watch out WoW. Something big is looking to take a chunk out of your market share. Realtime Worlds just might astonish us again.
