Games of the week for 02/09/08: Slam dunk edition

Recommended Videos

In honor of Devil May Cry 4 being released this week, here is a video of Nero saying “slam dunk,” a whole bunch. If I ever meet the script writer for any of the DMC games, I am going to hug him. The literary quality of the series carries with it a stupidity that verges on gourmet.

It’s Sunday night, and that means it’s time for the Destructoid staff to confess their sins and tell the world what has been played for the past week. Be sure to let us know what you’ve been up to as well. Quid pro quo, Clarice, I tell you things, you tell me things.

Hit the jump for more.

Ron Workman: If I told you, your head would implode. One time Jim took me fishing. He showed me how to bait the hook and cast the line. Then, he touched my bathing suit area. Jim is no longer allowed to take people fishing. Also, I told you all that Poker Smash was rad. Next weeks XBLA release isn’t going to be nearly as exciting.

Gameboi: Devil May Cry 4 has been my hit of the week. The music, the action, the 22 minute load time on my PS3’s hard drive: I love the shit out of this game.

TheGoldenDonut: After beating Dracula for the first time ever in a Castlevania game, The Dracula X Chronicles,  I immediately started playing Symphony of the Night so I could (violently) banish him from Earth a second time.  I’ve also finally started playing Final Fantasy X – better late than never – and have been liking it a lot more than I thought I would after hearing people complain about it over the years.

Jim Sterling: For me it’s been Devil May Cry 4 all weekend. Certainly not as tough as DMC3 was, but I’m finding chapter 10 and beyond on Devil Hunter mode to be putting up much stiffer resistance. It’s a good game, although it’s true that Capcom is capable of more. Outside of that, Guitar Hero III has taken up a healthy chunk of time. Superbus’ Radio Song is addictive.

Topher Cantler: I got a PS3 this week, and one of the first things I did was create a Japanese account so I could see if they had better stuff than us, which they of course do. I’ve been playing Every Day Together, starring the Sony cat Toro and friends, and it’s amazing how something so utterly stupid can be so entertaining. I also spent some time with Everyday Shooter and Ratchet & Clank Future.

Niero: Gitaroo Man! I pulled it out of the closet because I missed arthritis deeply.  I also recommend Devil May Cry 4 — it’s pretty and mostly entertaining despite the redundant door puzzles and cheesy dialog/voice acting. I will never forget playing the early Japanese demo of DMC which did not have any of the stupid “slam dunk” voiceovers OR the stupid colorful combo system that totally sucks the atmosphere out of what could have been a more poignant and stylish action game. To me its like making the lead in Resident Evil 4 scream “tubular!” on headshots. Ridiculous. I’m also looking forward to playing some old shooters this weekend: Gaiares and Fire Shark on the Genesis.

Chad Concelmo: You know what you can’t do when working a seven day week? Play videogames! In the little time I had, I played some more of the totally underrated (and totally tubular) LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. I also teased myself by playing the opening sequence of Super Metroid. I hope to play through that masterpiece again (for the millionth time) later this week.

Joe Burling: I finally received my copy of Burnout Paradise (360) so you’ll be seeing me play a lot of that this week. Up until now, I’ve resorted to demos and getting hands-on time with friends. I also purchased Rez HD. First of all, I love this game. Second, if you haven’t tried hooking up an extra controller or two yet, do it immediately! When I felt my back vibrate along with the music, but at a different beat than the controller in my hands, I felt like Jim Sterling unwrapping a shiny new monocle. I’m usually not into gimmicks (like using your PSP as a rear view mirror) but this one actually works! Try it! Also, as expected, I’ve been playing Barbie on the NES.

Faith: This week I’ve been entranced by World of Warcraft and its 10 day trial version. I made a human rogue named Phayth and a warrior scourge named Fausta. I haven’t got any farther than level 10 with my rogue and I still haven’t figure out the basic process of mining and such. I am such a newbie.

Also this week I’ve been playing Cooking Mama 2 on my Nintendo DS, Paper Mario on the Virtual Console and Devil May Cry 4 on Xbox 360. I’m stuck on DMC4 already. I can’t figure out the gyro puzzle in the castle. I gotta say I love the heavy metal soundtrack on the game though. Wicked cool tunes.

Husky Hog: I was going to try and keep this a secret but no longer. My name is Husky Hog, and I play World of Warcraft. I finally had the change to complete my quest to reach the maximum level of any MMORPG I started. Finally, this past Tuesday, at around 9:15 in the PM, I achieved this goal. Now I’m the proud owner of a level 70 Tauren Shaman, and a lot more happy in the pants.

BlindsideDork: I’ve been sticking with my usuals this week. Team Fortress 2, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, and of course Turok. My gaming feels complete. But maybe I will start a new title next week.

Hamza Aziz: I’ve been playing a ton of BioShock. I’m really hooked now and just love it. And Halo 3 for FNF, which actually sucked this week.

Grim: I recently got Space Channel 5, which is a much harder game than I thought it would be. Seriously, it cheats! I also went back to Gears of War for FNF and found out that most of my skill for the game had disappeared, but I still had fun. Ron and Savant couldn’t stop saying good things about Poker Smash, so I finally caved in and bought it. It’s gotta be one of the best XBLA games out there, no lie.

Nick Chester: Turok. Spiderwick Chronicles on the DS, Xbox 360, and Wii. Burnout Paradise. PixelJunk Monster. Rock Band. Waiting on hold with Comcast for over an hour because my Internet connection stopped working. Not having working Internet. Crying.

Jonathan Holmes: Picked Up Dewy’s Adventure for the Wii, which is down to $20 new at Gamestop. Go but it, for real. The graphics are awesome and the game play is more Monkey Ball than any Monkey Ball game to date.

Also got Battalion Wars Wii. It’s not that bad, but I should have waited for it to also drop to the $20 range. This Smash Bros Brawl delay has got me going out of my head to play something, anything to keep me from obsessing over the game. I actually spent more hours this week watching people play Brawl on NicoNico and Youtube than I did playing video games myself.
