Free-to-play working out for EverQuest, log-ins up 150%

Sony Online Entertainment’s long-running MMO went free-to-play last month, and from the looks of recent figures it seems that the move is working out for them. They knew they were on to something late last year when EverQuest II went F2P, so they tried it with the 13-year-old original and have seen similar successes.

Now that there’s a free play option, EverQuest log-ins are up 150 percent, usage is up 40 percent, and even in-game purchases have climbed 125 percent. GamesIndustry reports that 3.5 times more people are registering to play.

Lesson? People like free sh*t, even if it’s old and limited.

I’m betting whatever EverQuest Next is won’t be free.
