Free Realms overcomes technical hurdles for PSN release

Sony Online Entertainment’s Free Realms has been a major player in the free-to-play MMORPG space for some time. They intended to release the title on the PS3 at the same time, but some technical hurdles stood in the way. This week we finally see the release of Free Realms on the PlayStation Network. So what took so long?

“It was complicated because Free Realms is inherently a streaming title,” Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley told Kotaku. “There’s memory constraints on the PS3 that we had to work within.”

Beyond that, there was the process of making this PC game a true PS3 title. A new user interface, voice chat and parental controls had to be worked in. And with the PC title getting regular updates, SOE had to make sure that the same updates could come to the PS3 version as easily. They’re all there now.

Now it’s good to go, available for download on the PlayStation Network.
