‘More Compact’ for patch 5.3
With any MMO that has been running for close to a decade, it becomes hard to jump in down the line. Either you’ll spend an eternity getting up to the point where most players are at, or you’ll be hopelessly lost among all of the lore that’s been built up over the years. Final Fantasy XIV is much like that, with multiple content updates and expansions making the main quest longer than basically any Final Fantasy before it. That’s set to change a bit in the upcoming 5.3 patch, though.
In the latest “Letter from the Producer” update on the Square Enix forums, the FFXIV team confirmed that the main quest will be getting shortened a bit. “We’re working on adjusting the A Realm Reborn main scenario to be more compact, and are aiming for patch 5.3,” reads the update. This seems to be an effort to get people playing Shadowbringers, though it’s also probably a way to trim the fat that exists in the main story.
I think that’s a great idea, though I would hope the devs don’t go too overboard in hastening things. All I can think of is how modern World of Warcraft is more about the later expansions, rendering the beginning areas nearly worthless. If Square Enix could make the original tale of Final Fantasy XIV more palatable, it could remain an integral part of the game for years to come.
