Fanboy Friday: PokeMom Edition

Recommended Videos

Each week, Fanboy Friday takes a look at some of the most ridiculous, asinine, and unintentionally hilarious comments made by fanboys from a variety of gaming sites.

I’m back from the awesome Baltimore NARP, and that means Fanboy Friday is back as well. As nice as it was to get a break from having to trawl through all these terrible forums and websites, it’s time to dive in once again.

System Wars on the GameSpot forums has become my new favorite/most hated place on the internet. For times like these where there hasn’t been an overhyped game released or reviewed in the last few weeks, I can always depend on System Wars to give me something to write about.

Here we go!

Today’s winner of a thread is called “Why I hate Nintendo”. I bet you can already guess how intelligent and thought provoking the discourse will be.

Here’s what the guy starts out with:

Adam Sessler- When will we begin to see more of the traditional nintendo content like mario and zelda etc.Reggie Fils- 28 months into the system all I can say is , IT’s COMING!28 months in = IT’s Coming reminds me of the cube and n64 except the n64 games were worth the long waits.

While a few people point out that his argument is stupid, and that there are plenty of, you know, ACTUAL reasons to be upset at Nintendo, most people immediately enter fanboy mode.

A lot of people joined in with the original author, and made some additionally terrible arguments. This particular poster doesn’t seem to understand the concept of a company.

Nintendo is boring, as usual. ignore them. they only release games to earn money, but microsoft still eats them. lol

Apparently whoring out Halo 3, and Gears of War is totally not about the money AT ALL.

nintendo abondenoed the “gaming” market. thats why they release Wii Sports, Wii music and wii fit and so on. everybody wants money, your right, sony and microsoft too, but nintendo makes games ONLY for money. they barely think of anything else.

A couple people got into an argument about how Pokemon is getting stale because it’s the same rehashed game over and over again, but this guy stepped up to defend it. HE IS OVERWHELEMD BY EGGS.

You also have 2 on 2 battles, and internet play, and the poffins, and hatching eggs, and… so much stuff I felt overwhelmed by it.

Then people got into it, and one guy declared that the series was COMPLETLEY CHANGED with Diamond and Pearl. When asked to explain how, he couldn’t actually give any answers other than keep repeating that everyone who knew anything about video games knew how the game was totally new and unlike any Pokemon game that had previously been made. This is how he sums up his argument.

My Mom knew about the change to the series when it moved to Diamond and Pearl and you don’t know what it is? I’m perfectly content that you’re spewing this Pokemon hate while my Mom is well versed in the subject. That right there shows that you don’t know the series and you’re just parroting these talking points

Someone finally steps in to explain how the Diamond and Pearl are totally different games from the other ones. I can’t wait until the next entry in the series, where they introduce a charisma stat to make it totally unique and special.

The biggest change in Diamond/Pearl that effected me was the changing up of physical and special attacks. Every pokemon has a special attack stat and a physical attack stat. In the past games, every water attack was special, every fire attack was special, every fighting attack was physical, and every poisen attack was physical etc. Now that is not the case. Almost every pokemon feels new because of this tweak.

By this point in the thread, it’s a total clusterfuck with about 8 different arguments going on at once. Some people are fighting about Zelda, a lot of people are complaining about shovelware, the Pokekids are still at each other’s throats. Someone starts talking about Little King’s Story, which I am REALLY excited for (no joke). A lot of other people are excited too, but someone comes in with a really confusing animal metaphor to explain why it will sell poorly.

LKS is a great game but sadly more lems/cows hype it than sheeps them self so i dont think that this game will sell very well

As often comes down to fanboy arguments, things center around review scores. I’m not saying that the Wii has anything I’ve been interested in playing in the last couple months, but statements like these are just idiotic.

I hate them because 3rd parties ignore them and then you’re stuck waiting for 1st party software that may or may not pull an 8.8.

That’s right, if a game doesn’t score an 8.8, it is UTTER SHIT. DO NOT BUY IT.

Additionally, apparently people have taken the “AAA Title” term and created a new, madeup scale around it.

I think the hate comes from [Twilight Princess] flopping here, it was hyped AAA and only got AA. And it was the best flop I’ve played going by Gamespot scores.

Who the hell is assigning ‘AA’ ratings? Whoever they are, they’re pretty influential, because like this guy, some people only buy games based on these newfangled letter scores. Note this exchange:

who cares how many AAA exclusives it has? you only play games thats AAA? if you do, then i feel sorry for you, since your missing out on a lot of good games.

Pretty much. AAA games can hold me over for a long time even if my average of games is about 10 hours a day. I play a lot of high AA games, too.

So basically, what we’ve learned from this thread is that Nintendo is greedy, Sony and Microsoft don’t care about money and love gamers, games suck if they don’t score at least an 8.8, ‘AAA’ titles are the only ones worth buying, and each new version of Pokemon is so new and unique it’s like the difference between Super Mario 2 and Super Mario 64.

There are no words of wisdom this week because no one really said anything all that intelligent. Instead, you get this.
