The original Kung-Fu was a hugely successful arcade game which was ported to just about everything under the sun. I don’t understand why Irem never made a sequel to it, but those of us who’ve been waiting twenty-odd years for such a thing to happen can at least enjoy this fan-made sequel.
Kung-Fu 2 features familiar enemies and gameplay with some new abilities and an updated — but still retro — look. The game was originally created for the 2008 Retro Remakes Competition. Following that event, the game’s designer, Gary Gasko, continued to work on it by fixing bugs and so forth leading up to its final release over the weekend.
Having played around with it a bit, I’m really impressed. The game feels like Kung-Fu except that I’m able to make it past the first level. As you progress, you gain access to some special abilities that will be familiar to pretty much everyone and enjoy some amusing little cutscenes. On the whole, it’s an impressive effort. Check it out for yourself here.
