This weekend is the much anticipated EVO Championship series. Held every year, this competition gathers all of the best fighting game players to battle for prizes and bragging rights. If you are a fan of fighting games, hopefully you are heading there (let us know in the comments if you are!). However, if you can’t make it, you can still check out the stream of the event, brought to you by iPlayWinner x Team Spooky. Details of the stream schedule can be found here.

EVO has also released a schedule of panels, compiled by SRK, that will take part over the weekend. From interviewing Daigo “The Beast” Umehara to Capcom’s discussing their successful fighting game franchises, these panels are sure to be very informative and entertaining. Destructoid will be on location to bring you as much coverage from these as we can!

Anyway, check below for the official press release from the guys at EVO and GET HYPED!

With over well over a decade of history, EVO has grown from a small group of friends in an arcade into the largest fighting game competition in the world, and the 2011 EVO World Finals are right around the corner.

The final battle will go down July 29-31st, at the fabulous Rio Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thousands of competitors from 46 different countries will attend, including 2009 and 2010 Street Fighter champion Daigo Umehara who will attempt an unprecedented “3-peat” victory. Along the way to his goal he’ll face one of the strongest fields of competitors ever assembled, including US legend Justin Wong, Korean wizard Poongko, French phenomenon Kayane, UK champ Ryan Hart, and thousands more from around the globe.

Also in attendance will be some of people that make your favorite fighters, including Ono-san (producer of Street Fighter), Harada-san (producer of Tekken series), Niitsuma-san (producer of Marvel Vs Capcom 3), and many more. They’re there to watch the World Finals competition, but will also be presenting a series of EVO panels, to answer many of your questions and talk about work on their future projects.

EVO 2011 features five competitions this year, on Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Tekken 6, Mortal Kombat, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II, and of course Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition (the main event!), and we’re proud to say that all tournament matches will be played exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

In addition to the world-class competition, the entire weekend will be filled with special events, from high-profile grudge matches to world premier fighting game videos, and more. Be sure to check out as much as you can, but whatever you do do NOT miss the Grand Finals, running all day on Sunday, July 31st! Each game will be down to it’s final 8 competitors, but as Sunday ends, only one champion will remain standing. Come and join us July 29-31st to watch together at http://evo2k.com/live. Root for your favorites, and enjoy the incredible skills and heart on display!
