Even MORE incredible videogame-themed ukiyo-e prints

Recommended Videos

Remember when artist Jed Henry had the incredible idea to make prints of beloved videogame heroes in the style of Japanese ukiyo-e? The man hasn’t missed a beat, continuing with pieces based on Mario Kart, Castlevania, and more. He’s even got a massive Street Fighter II spread, which features the original 12 fighters with the odd substitution of Ken for Cammy.

But my favorites are definitely the Kirby and Star Fox prints. As you can see with Kirby, Jed finally made good on his promise to replace the boring English text with Japanese calligraphy, courtesy of his Japanese lit professor. Kirby as a whole is just remarkable — the little pink blob looks like Krang from Ninja Turtles, while Dark Matter is emerging from Dedede’s beak. For Star Fox, the re-imagining of Arwings as Son Goku-approved magic clouds is a stoke of genius.

Come August 1, Jed will begin selling his prints. He’s also going to set up a Kickstarter in order to raise money for actual woodblock prints of his Mario Kart piece! He was able to get in touch with David Bull, a British woodblock carver living in Japan and one of the top artists in his trade. How’s that for authenticity? Just keep following Jed’s Tumblr and Facebook pages for further details.
