[Update: According to IGN, Shadow of the Eternals will consist of twelve episodic releases for Wii U and PC. Precursor Games is seeking $1,500,000 to fund the project.]

More than ten years later, a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is finally on the horizon. Titled Shadow of the Eternals, the forthcoming follow-up to the survival horror cult classic is being developed by Precusor Games, who has announced plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign for the project on Monday, May 6.

Eternal Darkness was developed by Silicon Knights and published by Nintendo in 2002. The title is most memorable for its “sanity meter,” which depletes over time and enhances the game’s ominous atmosphere with a variety of psychological scares designed to make the player just as unhinged as their onscreen counterpart.

Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack has been confirmed to be involved with the title, whose studio has been more notable for courtroom drama rather than game development in recent years. The company became mired in legal battles with Epic Games following the release of Too Human in 2008, alleging that Epic unfairly used Unreal Engine 3 profits to fund Gears of War rather than make improvements to the software.

After five years of litigation a North Carolina court ruled Epic’s favor, ordering Silicon Knights pay $4.45 million in damages and destroy any unsold copies of games developed using Epic’s engine. Too Human was pulled from the Xbox Live marketplace shortly thereafter.
