Enter the Gungeon and the Switch are a match made in heaven

Dragun me back to the Gungeon Proper

When I first experienced Enter the Gungeon on the PS4, I couldn’t help but think of how great the game would play on a portable system. Today, that dream finally comes true, and it’s everything I could have hoped for.

While it doesn’t feature the Advanced Gungeons and Draguns Update yet, I have confirmed that it will launch simultaneously across all platforms, including the Switch, sometime in early 2018. What we get here is the base game along with the Supply Drop Update. It features fully customizable controls, local co-op, and the ability to take this disgustingly addictive game on the go with us wherever we want.

Speaking of local co-op, Gungeon even offers single Joy-Con compatibility by using the built-in motion control feature. Instead of aiming with the right joystick, players will have to tilt the controller in the direction that they want to shoot. It’s hardly the ideal way to play, and you won’t have to assuming you own another Joy-Con set or Pro Controller, but it’s a fun addition nonetheless.

There are three different video settings where you can choose between speed, beauty, or balanced. I went with the default balanced setting. During my roughly eight to nine hours of gameplay, I’ve experienced around eight instances of dramatic slowdown, which only lasted for about one or two seconds. Even in these cases, it slowed the whole screen, so it actually seemed to give me something of an advantage. Outside of these occurrences, it was fairly smooth sailing. Every single death was my own. Every single swear-inducing failure was due to my own incompetence. It’s fucking glorious.

It took a little while to get used to the smaller screen real estate, but once I did, I realized that this was going to become my go-to method for diving into the depths of The Gungeon. For a measly $14.99, I heartily recommend this port to anyone with even a passing interest.
