This special Elden Ring torch makes Caelid slightly less hellish

I’ll always remember my first trip to Caelid in Elden Ring, and I’m sure everyone else who stumbled into this rotten land can say the same — especially if you had a one-way ticket thanks to a certain transporter trap. It’s a downright creepy area with offputting music, harsh visual themes as far as the eye can see, and an overwhelming sense that you really shouldn’t hang around for very long. It’s like an asbestos-filled haunted house.

Don’t touch anything. Don’t breathe. Just get the hell out!

Even now as I pop back in from time to time to mop up any tucked-away locations or items I might’ve missed, I don’t like to dwell in Caelid any longer than I absolutely need to.

I more or less know my way around this zone, and I can tank hits from the freaky oversized dog-beasts and crow monstrosities if they catch me on horseback, but that doesn’t mean I’m comfortable. As it turns out, I totally missed an item in Caelid that would’ve made things slightly easier — or at least put my mind at ease a bit. I should’ve picked up the Beast-Repellent Torch before finishing Elden Ring. It’s not too late, though.

As shown in this clip from Reddit user DQC-, this particular torch allows you to keep certain creeps at a safe distance, although there are some caveats.

Beast type enemies won’t attack you if you have this torch in your hand

Extreme Dark Souls II energy, right? Remember the lanky Darkdwellers?

“A torch which burns oil infused with a special incense. The aroma pacifies wild beasts.”

Not everything we might consider a “beast” is susceptible, and red-eyed creatures can just shrug it off. But the Beast-Repellent Torch does at least stop the rats, wolves, normal bears, and nightmare hounds from pursuing you, and in my book, that’s a good deal.

You can find the torch pretty easily if you know your way around Caelid — it’s just an item for sale at one of the many merchants. Specifically, you can buy it at the Isolated Merchant’s Shack in northwestern Caelid, not far from a tower. There’s an easy-breezy Site of Grace if you’ve already explored this area, so just warp in with 1,200 Runes in hand.

I’m sure there are other spots in Elden Ring where this torch would be particularly effective, but here’s one idea from Reddit user Dramatic-Week2412: “This trick is pretty useful in one of the caves with [a certain enemy who can summon spirit wolves].” (I’m trying to be spoiler-conscious, as it’s a later-game area, but keep your eyes peeled.)

The beast wars Reddit thread also pointed out another useful torch I missed during my first Elden Ring run: Sentry’s Torch. As the in-game description puts it, this item “allows the bearer to see assassins cloaked in veils,” which, damn — sure could’ve used that too!

I may be done with the main story in Elden Ring, but the more I see what other players are getting up to, the more I realize there’s so much out there left to find. I don’t want it to end. I’m doing everything I can to postpone it, but there’s already a hole in my heart.
