There’s nothing like a little confusion and crossed-wires to keep gamers on their toes. In an investor conference call yesterday, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello referenced the upcoming Star Wars The Old Republic MMO as “microtransaction-based.”

“Other initiatives we’ve announced, for example the Star Wars online MMO, are mid-season games which are microtransaction-based,” he said.

He then mentioned that more details on how this would work would be revealed in the February investors conference call, leaving it at that. EA has since responded to Shacknews regarding this information, saying that “no statements have been made about the Star Wars business model.”

Apparently, this is all a big misunderstanding; it looks like we’ll have to wait until February to find out for sure. In the meantime, let’s speculate — how do you think a microtransaction-based Star Wars MMO would do? Would you buy a light saber handle for $5?
