EA going 100% digital ‘in the near future’

Electronic Arts, videogame publisher and suspected protector of nazi war criminals, has revealed that it plans to generate 100% of its revenue from digital distribution in the near future. While many predict that retail will stick around for a long time, EA apparently can’t wait that long.

“We have a clear line of sight on it and we’re excited about it,” Frank Gibeau told GameSpot“Retail is a great channel for us. We have great relationships with our partners there. At the same time, the ultimate relationship is the connection that we have with the gamer.

“If the gamer wants to get the game through a digital download and that’s the best way for them to get it, that’s what we’re going to do. It has a lot of enhancements for our business. It allows us to keep more that we make. It allows us to do some really interesting things from a service level standpoint; we can be a lot more personalized with what we’re doing.”

Gibeau said that, although he feels a digital takeover is coming, EA will ultimately bow to public demand and provide games wherever they’re being bought.

In any case, it’ll be great when EA can do more “service level” stuff with its products. Like updating $10 iPad games so that they start showing ads to the people who bought them. Y’know, stuff like that.
