EA: Consoles now account for 40% of games industry

Electronic Arts has remarked on the dwindling influence of dedicated games consoles, claiming they now account for 40% of the games industry, while the iPad has become the fastest growing platform. Times are changing, folks!

“Consoles used to be 80% of the industry as recently as 2000,” said CEO John Riccitiello. “Consoles today are 40% of the game industry, so what do we really have?

“We have a new hardware platform and we’re putting out software every ninety days. Our fastest growing platform is the iPad right now and that didn’t exist eighteen months ago.”

Riccitiello argues that the old way of doing things, where new hardware arrives every five years, isn’t a smart way to run a business, and sees more value in cross-platform play, microtransactions and social networking than in brand new hardware with bumped-up graphics.
