E3: God of War: Origins delivers exactly what’s promised

Sony’s bringing Ready At Dawn’s PlayStation Portable titles — God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta — to the PlayStation 3 on one Blu-ray disc as God of War: Origins Collection this fall.

Both games are being “re-mastered” by developer Ready at Dawn for high-definition televisions (full 1080p), with support for stereoscopic 3D thrown it for good measure, and the results are stunning in action. The visuals are surprisingly sharp for a game that was originally designed for a PSP, and the 3D effects were subtle but never overwhelming.

I fought through the early Scylla battle in Ghost of Sparta, taking full control of both analog sticks on the DualShock controller to move Kratos about. Give some of my biggest issues with the games had to do with the cramped hardware it was originally released for, this was a welcome change.

For God of War fans who don’t have Sony’s handheld, you’re in for a real treat — Ready at Dawn’s God of War titles are some of the best in the series. With full trophy support, and some DLC content for Ghost of Sparta (including a skin and a “game directors” roundtable video), this may be the best way to experience them.

God of War: Origins Collection is out September 13.
