I’ll say it right now: Kinect Sports is Wii Sports…for Kinect. That’s hardly a bad thing, as Wii Sports is pretty awesome.

Plus, it’s being developed by Rare. In fact, a man from Rare was right on hand to demonstrate exactly how enthusiastic you can be when stirring up a crowd of avatars to do the wave, or how to act when running a virtual 200-meter hurdle. By that I mean “run in place a bunch and jump up and down a lot”.

Only the hurdling was demonstrated live, but Kinect Sports will feature a bunch of other events, including football, bowling, track and field events (such as the javelin throw and long jump), table tennis, and boxing.

So yeah, Wii Sports…for Kinect. It’ll be interesting to see how the different technologies and gestures compare for doing what are arguably the same kinds of actions.
