E3 09: Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO and…that’s all we know!

I just stepped out of the “secret” press conference Square Enix hosted and, well, it was a rather interesting experience. It wasn’t terrible by any means — in fact, everyone there could not have been nicer or more gracious — but the entire focus was on nothing but the recently announced Final Fantasy XIV. This would have been fine, but once the conference started the moderator came out and immediately opened the floor to questions. But … but … none of us knew anything about the game outside of the quick trailer shown at Sony’s presentation yesterday. How were we supposed to ask anything?

Luckily, many people stepped up with interesting — if rather general (but who can blame them?) — questions.

Based on the little information that was revealed, Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO set in a different, but similar, world than its online predecessor Final Fantasy XI and will have a worldwide release exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and PC. Other than that, nothing more was talked about outside of a lot of “no comments.”

As a guy who hasn’t played Final Fantasy XI, it was hard for me to find anything to get too excited about regarding Final Fantasy XIV. But, I have to admit, the game looks beautiful. Check out the trailer after the jump and the gallery with a handful of gorgeous screens that the producer promises are a combination of in-game and pre-rendered cutscene footage. If the game ends up looking this good in the end, I may very well dive into the world of MMOs that I have always wanted to brave. Could Final Fantasy XIV break my MMO virginity? It certainly is doing a good job wooing me.
