The DSi has proven once again that Nintendo consoles print money, with news that in the US alone, the latest dual-screened handheld has achieved 435,000 sales within a week. This beats the DS Lite’s first week on shelves, with the last machine gaining 226,000 by this point.

“These numbers demonstrate that the Nintendo DS brand remains strong, and that consumers continue to look for the best new experiences on their portable video game systems,” say Nintendo of America’s smile princess Cammie Dunaway.

It would seem that the world has been surprisingly quick to toss aside the DS Lite in favor of a DSi. Whether that’s legitimately down to the new features or whether Nintendo has finally achieved such “trendy” status that it can make and sell any new machine (dubbed hereafter “The Apple Effect”) remains to be seen.

I do know I bought a DSi last night, though. It’s pretty bloody cute.
