DS and Wii set US sales records in 2010

Last year, some bloggers got it into their heads that the Wii was “failing” because — shock — a five-year-old console wasn’t selling quite so many millions of units as once did. I called them silly people for this, and apparently I have the numbers to back me up, as Nintendo boasts that it set new sales records in 2010, doing better than even I gave it credit for.

The DS still managed to outpace its bigger cousin, having reached 47 million sales since its November 2004 launch and becoming the best selling videogame system of all time. The Wii has sold over 34 million in the US since it launched.

As for 2010, the Wii sold over 7 million units for the third calender year in a row, an accomplishment that Nintendo says is unrivaled by other systems.

“When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products,” says savory NOA boss Reggie Fils-Aime. “When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed.”

So yeah, the Wii failed last year or something.
