DragonSword: Awakening has a fair number of familiars for you to enjoy your adventure with, and they can be immensely useful for the in-game grind. Familiars not only help you move faster across the map, but they also have additional skills.
In this guide, I will go through which familiars are the best options currently available and which ones are rather avoidable.
Complete DragonSword: Awakening Familiars tier list
Before I continue, it’s important to note that the game shows you a total of 29 familiars. There are just eight of them, with the rest being different variants of the main species. All variants of the same species will have the same function.
It still makes sense for you to find as many as possible because that will unlock additional abilities. Unlocking these additional effects will improve how your familiars perform in the game.
To separate the options, I have used three different tiers:
- S-tier choices are just about the most useful family tiers in the game.
- A-tier choices are useful, but they are slightly niche compared to S-tier choices.
- B-tier choices are extremely limited, but they might be suitable options for beginners.
S-tier

- Direwolf: The Direwolf is the best mount in the game because it offers the Boost Jump ability. This ability allows you to jump higher, which makes it easy for you to scale heights. You can also combine your jump to fly across the map, which reduces the time it takes to move from one spot to another. The ability has no cooldown, so you can spam it if you would like. Finally, all your familiars will also have reduced stamina consumption and increased movement speed when moving on land.
- Griffon: The Griffon allows you to enjoy a super jump with its Charged Jump ability. It gives you the chance to jump higher, and you can combine that with your airtime. The ability has a higher cooldown of five seconds, but you can reduce it by unlocking more Griffons. Your movement speed during the glide that happens after the jump also increases by 20%. This is one of the best movement-based abilities you can enjoy in the glitch.
- Dragon: The Dragon has only one available version, but it comes with the broken Air Free Dash ability. With a cooldown of 3 seconds, you can use this ability to quickly move in any direction in the air. Whether you are trying to dodge an enemy or an incoming attack, the air dash allows you to be unpredictable and get a big advantage over your enemies.
A-tier

- Squirrel: The squirrel is not only adorably cute, but it can help you climb faster. It comes with the Climbing Jump ability that reduces stamina consumption when you are climbing, and it also increases movement speed for all familiars when you are climbing. In simple words, you will be able to vertically manoeuvre better, which is always key in my books.
- Cat: ideally, I would have loved to place the Cat in both the S tier and B tier. Its passive ability is entirely related to swimming. With the Cat, you can have Swim Dash available with a cooldown of 2 seconds. It will help you move for longer on water. It reduces stamina consumption when you are moving, and it also increases your movement speed. You will be moving quicker and for longer on water, but there is no point if you are using the familiar on land.
- Bird: This is one of the best mounts to unlock early game, as you can fly across different spots. Air Dash is a great ability that allows you to move quickly in the air. It also reduces stamina consumption while granting movement speed in air.
- Sky Wolf: It offers the same functionality as the cat, but looks cooler to use.
B-tier

- Beetle: the Beetle is the first familiar you will unlock, and I have plenty of sweet memories with it. It does not have the very best abilities. You need to unlock at least two of them to get more stamina for your familiars. At level 4, the passive offers you 30% extra stamina, which can be useful.
