Dragon’s Dogma 2: How to Unlock Mystic Spearhand Vocation

Handful of magic, fistful of steel.

If you’re having difficulty choosing between magic wielder or melee based vocations in Dragon’s Dogma 2, Mystic Spearhand might be the choice for you. However, it’s not unlocked as part of the four initial vocations. You must complete a special event to get it.

You get the quest from Melve as part of the village’s quest line. Sometime after the initial adventures, if you return to Melve, Lennart will give you a quest called Nesting Troubles, wherein you need to lob a cask of explosions followed by a jar of poison at nesting Saurians. You’ll then be told to visit again later.

After some time has passed, return to Melve. Provided you wait long enough, you’ll find it under attack by a dragon. However, this dragon seems diseased as it has pustules all over its body, which are its weak points. The quest is called Readvent of Calamity, but you’ll likely be too preoccupied with fighting a dragon to notice it landing in your log.

Once the dragon is chased off, you’ll find Sigurd, a hooded person, in the direct vicinity. You’ll see him spoken to in the cutscene after the dragon fight. Talk to him and “ask about his manner of fighting,” and you’ll receive the Mystic Spearhand vocation. It’s then available to you to choose at a Vocation Guild.

Using the Mystic Spearhand vocation

While the description makes it sound like Mystic Spearhand combines a spellcaster with a martial artist, you largely won’t be flinging fire at enemies. They largely do damage with their double-ended “duospear,” but they do have a few spells at their disposal. This includes one that slows down enemies and another that creates a shadow clone of the Arisen. They also have the ability to launch balls of energy from their hand, similar to the Mage and Sorcerer vocations.

However, they are still largely a melee character. Differentiating themselves from fighters and warriors, they’re great at crowd control and able to hit multiple targets if they’re encircled. They’re fast and agile, and while they lack the thunder and fury of the more dedicated spellcasting vocations, they’re just a lot of fun to play as. However, it’s useful to note that only The Arisen can use the Mystic Spearhand Vocation.
