Double Fine has four games in the pipeline

Double Fine has made Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. That’s it, as far as retail is concerned. Now, according to founder Tim Schafer, the studio is currently working on four games. Wait, what!?

Since a follow-up to Brutal Legend was unexpectedly denied, the team looked at some of the game prototypes that had been kicking around at Double Fine, and picked the four best. “In a couple of months all four games got signed,” Schafer said at Develop. “Trying to kill us made us multiply.”

He revealed that “some of the games are downloadable, and some are retail.” I was a little worried that they might be spreading themselves thin, so that’s kind of reassuring. I’m also pleased to here some of these titles are digital, as that will allow for more risky, experimental design.

Schafer was willing to say these projects will have smaller budgets, which means “there’s less compromise.” That’s exactly what you want to hear when talking about Double Fine. Some of these mysterious games are supposed to be coming out this year; the wait shouldn’t be too painful.
