From Brutal Legend to downloadable titles, now Double Fine Productions is exploring even more new territory. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that the developer is working on Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, a new game for Kinect for Xbox 360.

The game will have players teaming up with Cookie Monster, Elmo, and other popular Sesame Street characters as they explore a living storybook, as they meet monster pals. It is a game directed as kids, as you’d guess, so expect plenty of life lessons and problems to solve involving colors, shapes, letters, and numbers.

Sesame Street had a profound effect on me, and many members of the Double Fine team, when we were children,” says Tim Schafer. “So did video games. Now many of us are parents and we want to share with our kids the great experiences we had, but also the completely new ones made possible by cutting-edge technology like Kinect for Xbox 360. So it’s a labor of love on many levels.”

Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster
is out this fall. It’s not Psychonauts 2, but it’s nice to see such a respected, high-profile developer working on games for children. Our little gamers certainly could use more than the typical shovelware they’re used to getting.
