Don’t junk that PS3 just yet: Tekken 5 DR to receive online play (update)

Squeee! Tekken 5 (and especially Dark Resurrection) has some of the best-looking graphics in a fighting game as well as its renowned super-tight gameplay that surely has Tomonobu Itagaki (pictured here hard at work on another half-assed Dead Or Alive) crying tears of sad into his life-sized Kasumi pillow. But the recent console release was sans online multiplayer, something that is becoming an alarming trend in next-gen fighters. Until now, that is…

According to SDTekken.com:

The latest issue of Famitsu magazine has details on Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection with online versus play! With the cost of 2800 Yen(1000 Yen if you already downloaded the old version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection) you will be able to play FREE online versus matches with people all over the world! There will also be an online leaderboard that keeps track of player rankings! There is no official release date for the upgraded version of T5DR…

Honestly, before this game was announced for Sony’s struggling Blu-ray player I was actively seeking out an original arcade cabinet, so when it did arrive (for $20 no less) I felt the price of a PS3 was not so bad in comparison. Unfortunately, you can only beat your friends and girlfriend so many times before no one wants to play with you anymore, but now I can get my face owned by fanatical Japanese players all day, every day. And you can too!

All I need now is to find a working Killer Instinct unit. Stop button mashing n00bs!!!

[Update: Several sites, including Gamepro, are confirming reports that the online functionality will of course be coming to the US sometime “later this year.” The game is officially being redubbed Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online and in addition to the robust online features, which include spectating ongoing games from the lobby and a variety of matchmaking options, two new modes will also be making their way into players hands: Practice Mode (for the newb in all of us) and Survival Mode (for the kewl kids only). Who’s excited?!

Thanks to Joe “Lili” Burling. How long do you think you can withstand his tips?]
