While watching this GameTrailers exclusive trailer for Prizefighter, I was trying really hard to forget that the game’s developer, Venom Games, were responsible for last-gen’s Rocky and Rocky Legends. While not exactly terrible games, both games were competing head-to-head with EA Chicago’s Fight Night games, and the results weren’t pretty.
But with EA Chicago on the outs, and no official word on a new Fight Night game, 2K’s Prizefighter looks like it may be the only option to control digital pugilists in the near future. However, it’s impossible to note how Prizefighter doesn’t look as good as Fight Night Round 3, a game that was released on the Xbox 360 in early 2006, not long after the console’s release, when developers were still getting familiar with the hardware.
Don’t get me wrong; the game looks OK in action, and I like the focus on character progression and career building. But come June 2008 when the game hits the Xbox 360, I’m pretty sure gamers are going to be expecting a bit more than videos of a rambling Don King, so I’m hoping they bring strong gameplay to the plate. I’m going to withhold final judgment, though, because I’m still itching to play the game; I can’t be the only one, can I?
