This is an argument I’ve seen crop up in a few places recently, and so I thought I’d post the question to you: does Sony owe you anything for the PlayStation Network being down for over a week?
There is talk of a free PSN game at least being offered to PlayStation Plus subscribers, but what about the rest of you?
When Xbox Live went down during the fateful holiday period of 2008, subscribers were given the bloody awful Undertow by way of recompense. Some would say it would’ve been kinder to not give us anything rather than give us Undertow, but it was something.
Of course, people pay for Xbox Live if they want to play games online. With PSN, nobody’s shortchanged if they can’t play SOCOM 4. However, they did purchase the game, mostly with the intent of playing it online, and that’s something they’ve been unable to do since it launched. Do they deserve something for a wasted week?
Personally, while I don’t think Sony is morally obligated to give anything away for a free service going down, I do think it would be in the company’s best interests to make a token gesture for all gamers, not just Plus users. It would at least be a bit of good PR after a week of terrible press.
