Do you need to play Spider-Man to understand Spider-Man 2?

No spoilers ahead!

Spider-Man 2, the long-awaited numbered sequel to the 2018 monster hit, is finally upon us. As a PS5 exclusive, it’s also the first game in the series to not be released on the PS4. That doesn’t mean it’s the first game in the series to be released on PS5 though. The original game was remastered for PS5, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales was a PS5 launch title that also had a PS4 release.

Should you play Spider-Man and Miles Morales before Spider-Man 2?

In short, yes, you should play Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales before playing Spider-Man 2. The new game is a direct sequel to the first, and Miles Morales will be playable in Spider-Man 2 alongside Peter Parker.

Spider-Man 2 takes place nine months after the events of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which took place a year after the events of the first game. Up to now, the stories from each game in Insomniac’s series have been tightly linked narratively, and it looks like that trend will continue for Spider-Man 2.

If you do want to play the first two games in the series, both can be played on PS4, PS5, and PC. According to How Long To Beat, the main story of Spider-Man takes an average of 17 hours, while Miles Morales is just 7.5 hours for the story. That gives you plenty of time to catch up before Spider-Man 2.

That said, there is a recap available in Spider-Man 2 if you really want to jump in immediately.
