It’s only August, but the hype for 2026 games is already building thanks in large part to Resident Evil: Requiem dropping at the end of next February.
To be honest, RE9 didn’t have to show much for us to be excited for it already. Capcom’s track record with the franchise over the past eight or so years has done enough to warrant the hype, but the footage coming out of Gamescom has only heightened it.
Destructoid is in the building at Gamescom for some hands-on time with RE9 this week, but we’ve seen enough to mark this down as our winner for the Most Anticipated Game as part of Destructoid’s Gamescom Awards for 2025. Congratulations to Capcom, and be prepared, because this likely will be just one of many awards the title receives at this event.
The most exciting thing about RE9’s prospects is Capcom has only shown a small portion of the game featuring new character Grace Ashcroft being stalked by a horrific, gangly monster woman called the Witch. But it evokes such terror and discomfort that we can only expect even more in the full game.
RE9 also offers the opportunity to play in third or first person perspective, which could make for some interesting playthroughs and even add a little variety for subsequent ones, so that’s even more exciting to think about.
Beyond that, the Resident Evil series always has a lot more going on under the hood and behind the scenes for players to unravel as they make their way through the game. Is Grace the only character? What does the ruins of Raccoon City have to do with the story? Why is Grace an important figure?
All of these questions and mysteries will hopefully be revealed when Resident Evil: Requiem launches on Feb. 27, 2026, and we will be there on day one to find out for ourselves.
