We’re no strangers to odd narrative twists, but who would have thought zombies would make an appearance in Army of Two: the 40th Day — a game that seems grounded in physical reality?

But zombies are exactly what Nick Chester and I discovered during our demo playthrough this afternoon.

The slice opens in a dingy alley somewhere in Shanghai. After a few seconds of freedom, Salem and Rios get cozy with a Space Marine. Servicing as a tutorial device, this calm Space Marine held our hand and told us about the game’s various mechanics, expecting precision from us at all times. As the starter mission ended, we were given a choice to kill the kind man in the bulky armor. We chose to end his life.

Salem puts a bullet into his head neck. He falls down … and then he gets back up.

Seeking brains or feeding off undread adrenaline, we haven’t the slightest idea — but the fact of the matter is that it took several more bullets and a fall from a building to kill an obviously zombified man. What is this, Resident Evil?

[Update: I guess I should have went more over the top with this. For those of you who didn’t get it (and that’s fine; it’s my fault) we don’t really think zombies are in Army of Two: the 40th Day. We just thought Mr. Space Marine ate quite a bit of lead in a ridiculous cut-scene. And, yes, apparently the bullet went through his neck — not the back of his head as we once thought. That totally explains why he was able to fight, eat three more bullets, and stay standing long enough to be pushed off the side of a building.]
