“The emphasis is on how you unravel the story,” said SCEJ’s Takeshi Kajii, producer of Demon’s Souls, an upcoming PS3 RPG. We spoke with him at last weekend’s Anime Expo after a panel on the game. We wanted to know if the game had a true and final ending.

“We’re not feeding you a story,” Kajii says. “Every play is your own story.”

When we asked for clarification, he said that there is an end to the game, but reaching that point should not be your goal. Aside from that, the end is not a definite end. The more you play, the more the backstory is revealed.

A viewpoint change makes more sense of it: the players make the story.

“This game is only complete when the player actually plays the game,” says Kajii. “Each and every one who plays the game will have their own Demon’s Souls story.”

“The game by itself is not complete. What’s there only represents 30% of the game. The rest is filled out by people playing the game.”
