Demo of Super Smash Land demake releasing this Friday

From simple 8-bit still image interpretations to full-on games, demakes are delightful. I love to fantasize about the ways modern games and their mechanics might have been implemented on classic consoles. As is often the case with fan efforts, however, many of the actual games which result from this can be less than impressive.

Above is an example of a game which looks as though it will fall on the better end of the spectrum. Super Smash Land is a Gameboy demake of the Super Smash Bros. series made in Game Maker 8 and it has certainly piqued my interest. With only two buttons (attack and jump) and no shield of any kind, the approach one would have to take to playing the game should be dramatically different from its inspiration. But what doesn’t change is the multiplayer, which will allow for up to four players to compete.

A demo of Super Smash Land will be releasing on Friday and features Mario and Kirby as playable characters. The game’s final roster has yet to be announced but developer Dan Fornace has stated that the list will be kept small and will also be including Pikachu and Link.
