Darkspore requires constant Internet connection (Update)

[Update: Electronic Arts has told us this this is not intended as DRM, but as part of the experience. According to the publisher, even if you’re playing a single-player game, your loot and experience need to be sent to EA’s online servers for use with co-op and PvP. While PC players are still upset over the restrictions, EA is adamant it’s a required part of the experience.]

Here we go again!

Electronic Arts has, for the hundredth time, upset PC gamers with more needless DRM restrictions. According to its online disclosure agreement, Darkspore will require a permanent online connection in order to be played, even on Steam.

There have been mutterings about Darkspore since last month, due to the beta also requiring a constant connection. It would appear that such restrictions are now confirmed for the final retail build as well.

As always, this won’t affect the majority of PC gamers who are likely always online anyway, but the principal of the thing has caused the obligatory outrage that comes with any unnecessary DRM measure. Still, at least it doesn’t have SecuROM … that we know of.

[Thanks, Ethan]
