Darksiders creator returns to games with Battle Chasers

He’s also going to finish the comic

Joe Madureira first hit it big drawing X-Men and Spider-Man for Marvel comics in the ’90s. He quickly became one of the most influential artists in the field, thanks to a style that melded lessons learned from other American comics artists like Arthur Adams and John Byrne with the work of Japanese Capcom artists like Akiman and Bengus. In fact, Akiman and Bengus are the names of two minor characters from the ill-fated Battle Chasers comic book, Madureira’s self published series for Image comics, which came to an abrupt halt over ten years ago.

Now Battle Chasers is back, in videogame form. Teaming with his fellow Darksiders co-creator Ryan Stefanelli and the development team at Airship Syndicate, Madureira’s Kickstarter campaign for Battle Chasers: Nightwar is already fully funded and on its way to PC, Mac, PS4 and Xbox One. I was a huge fan of the comic back in the day, in no small part because Gully and Calibretto, two of the story’s initial protagonists, reminded me so much of characters from the classic SNES JRPG Chrono Trigger. Seeing their triumphant return take place in a game that plays a lot like Chrono Trigger feels perfect on multiple levels.

I just hope the game ends up making it to Nintendo consoles at some point so I can use that as an excuse to interview Madureira for Nintendo Force
