Crytek made Ryse so you can just mash buttons if you want

Press X to express more disappointment

Ryse: Son of Rome is already on thin ice with a lot of people. Between the incessant quick-time events and the bland-looking gameplay, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of excitement for this title. Some information recently came out about the combat mechanics that won’t help it win back any public favor.

In an interview with Game Reactor, design director PJ Estevez detailed how Crytek built Ryse for the unskilled player. “We have this concept we call mashing to mastery,” Estevez said. “The idea is that anyone can play it and they can mash the buttons and fight, but if you get the right timing you’re able to actually master it. Master the reaction you get out of the AI. You worked on the AI, you get them to this executable state and you execute them.”

Essentially, if you want to be terrible, you can still win; but, if you want to master it, you can win better. A lot of games aren’t all that difficult anymore, and not everything has to be Dark Souls, but c’mon guys — we don’t want everything handed to us.
