Consoles are ‘too limited’ for the Oculus Rift

The developers of the VR headset have big plans

Whilst the imminent launches of the PS4 and Xbox One have gamers in a frothy mess, the thing that has me excited is the Oculus Rift. I’ve heard the question asked “Why couldn’t the Rift be used with a console?” quite a lot but it seems like that won’t happen. In an interview with Techradar, Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey says the fixed spec for consoles is a weakness

“The problem with consoles in general is that once they come out they’re locked to a certain spec for a long, long time,” Palmer explains. “Consoles are too limited for what we want to do, we’re trying to make the best virtual reality device in the world and we want to continue to innovate and upgrade every year.” Whilst the longer console cycles benefit gamers from a financial standpoint, as they don’t have to shell out on new consoles every couple of years, that fixed hardware is a downside to developing something like the Rift.

As someone who has yet to get a hands on experience with the Oculus Rift, I’m a bit worried about the possibility of feeling ill whilst wearing the headset. “We already have internal prototypes that for some content completely eliminate motion sickness,” Luckey confirms. Joy! I seriously can’t wait for the final version of the Rift to come out, so I can try some of the cool-looking games that are going to support the headset.

I mean, d’you think you’re gonna find this kind of thing on a console?
