Can lightning strike thrice?
There was a single word that used to best sum up Ubisoft’s E3 press conferences: Cringe. From awkward skits to bizarre dance numbers, Ubisoft’s E3 pressers were the sort of show that routinely made you tighten your jaw and clench your eyes. (Can you clench your eyes?)
But then, something unexpected happened. Two years ago, Ubisoft put on what might’ve been E3’s best show. 2018 followed suit. Suddenly, Ubisoft’s kind of good at this!
What might Ubisoft have up its sleeve this year? We’re sure to see a lengthy gameplay breakdown from Ghost Recon Breakpoint. We’ll also likely get a look at Division 2‘s plans for later this year. and possibly a preview of plans for its second year. And, you can bet there will be something about Rainbow Six Siege.
However, it’s the big question marks that are more intriguing. Word around town is that Ubisoft is working on some sort of Rocket League-like roller derby game. There’s also credible speculation that Ubisoft is on the verge of announcing a new Splinter Cell.
My bold prediction is that we get a proper introduction to the new Assassin’s Creed vikings-themed game. Ubisoft has said that there won’t be another Assassin’s Creed in 2019, but it might be something that’s targeting release in the first three months of 2020. Ubisoft will launch four triple-A titles by the end of the fiscal year; it’s reasonable to think Ubisoft might test the waters by seeing how Assassin’s Creed does in the spring rather than the fall.
Could 2019 possibly make three consecutive years with tolerate (if not downright enjoyable!) Ubisoft press conferences? We’re 30 minutes away from finding out. The festivities kick off at 1pm Pacific. Get in the comments and do what you do best, you all-star commenter.
My bolder, boldest, and bolderest prediction is a new Rayman 2D game. It’s time. It’s really really really time.
