The Call of Duty movie officially has a writing team and director, and I’m feeling cautiously optimistic about it now

Lock and load.

The long overdue Call of Duty movie now has a creative team behind it, and it contains some big names that have a long track record of success in both TV and movies.

Paramount Pictures announced today that the CoD live-action film will be directed by Peter Berg, who will also serve as co-writer and producer alongside Taylor Sheridan. Berg is an industry veteran who’s worked on all sorts of projects over the years, but Sheridan is the name that has given me hope.

Sheridan is the writer and creator of successful TV shows like Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and 1923, so he has found a way to keep busy, especially over the past few years. These shows have all reviewed decently well, and with Berg helping to write the movie, there’s reason to believe they could cook up something fun.

Berg has been around for decades, most notably directing the original Friday Night Lights movie, Will Smith superhero movie Hancock, Patriots Day, and Deepwater Horizon, alongside many TV episodes in shows like The Leftovers, so he’s got plenty of experience with a budget.

CoD has a ton of source material to pull from, so I will be curious to see if the movie takes on the Modern Warfare or Black Ops era. There are also a lot of iconic characters that could come into the fold, including Captain Price, Soap, Frank Woods, and other globetrotting soldiers to pick from, and the potential for sequels is pretty limitless. The hope is that this writing team will handle the storyline with care while also bringing the bombastic action the franchise is known for to the big screen.

A CoD film doesn’t have to have an award-winning script or Academy Award-level acting, but I don’t think anyone would be opposed to either scenario. As long as it’s fun and maintains the action setpieces the franchise’s gameplay is known for, we could be in for a good time.

The CoD movie was officially announced at the beginning of September, and it does not currently have an estimated release window.
