Kotaku posted about a new French gaming magazine called Amusement a few days ago that caught my eye and today they got some very cool images from one of the mag’s stories. I’m going two ways with this story so stick with me.
The first direction is to show off the images from the story, entitled “Made of Myth“. It seems to be a photo essay featuring some very cool models. They are some gorgeous looking mock-ups of the way videogames are actually made. Who knew Miyamoto and Yuji Naka were actually bent over a work table to make their games. Check the images out below as they are absolutely fantastic. This is the kind of thing that shows up in well designed magazines.
Which, brings me to my next point. Where have gaming magazines like Amusement been? Flipping through the magazine’s website and checking out the page spreads it’s clear that this is a magazine that eschews page layouts that look like they were designed for (or by) five-year-olds for some actual style and design. If gaming magazines looked this well made and high-end I’d be scooping them up without a second thought. Instead we get the likes of GamePro, where every page is crammed with more info than you could ever use and page design is more about the amount of screenshots one can shove on the page than what the content of the magazine and the story should be. Could you even imagine a photo essay in any of the gaming magazines you find on the magazine rack? If only I could read French.
