If Sergio Leone had directed a movie based on Zelda… it probably wouldn’t look anything like this, actually. It’s a lot closer to the cheese that Takashi Miike’s Sukiyaki Western Django oozes out. Still, a western that borrows elements from the Zelda series is novel enough to watch at least once.
Fistful of Rupees is a three-part miniseries directed by Nathan Kitada and Aaron Umetani. Characters are slightly tweaked to better fit the more grounded, non-magical atmosphere. For example, Colonel Ganon, played by musician Rawn, is the leader of gang of bandits calling themselves “Moblins,” while Zelda, played by actress-turned-games journalist Lisa Foiles, is a school teacher who moonlights as the mysterious lawman Sheik.
Link has been redesigned as a nameless Native American survivor of Ganon’s raid on his village, but TJ Smith is obviously way too white to be playing him. At the very least, he has been kept mute, a trait that just about every other live-action Zelda film seems to disregard. Kudos for that!
