Check out Axiom Verge, a one-man Metroidvania

This is the first trailer for the upcoming indie game, Axiom Verge, a one-man project from developer Tom Happ and I’m ready to throw down some money now. A 2D, sprite-based “Metroidvania,” the trailer depicts a variety of weapons and equipment along with what appear to be many vertical shafts and some massive bosses.

I adore the art direction here, which calls to mind Life Force and R-Type while very clearly drawing a ton of inspiration from Metroid. Also listed as an inspiration is one of my favorite games ever, Rygar, so Happ is clearly speaking my language. We have a lengthy wait ahead, as Axiom Verge won’t be arriving on PC and the Xbox Live Indie Games marketplace until sometime next year. What a tease.
